Patricia MacKenzie has been teaching dance in
the Alberni Valley for over forty-four years. She is dedicated
to bringing out the best in every child, while focusing on the
development of strong technique, artistry and discipline in dance
education. Her teaching is based on an understanding of the importance
of music, dance and movement in the nurturing of the whole child. Small
classes, with lots of personal attention, are offered for those
interested in dance as recreation while providing the strong technical
base required by those hoping to pursue dance more seriously. Some
classes are eligible for external course graduation credits recognized
by the Provincial Ministry of Education. Pattie MacKenzie strives
to encourage each child to find the determination, focus, discipline,
and joy in movement inherent in good dance. Students gain strength,
coordination and grace while learning about commitment, self-respect and
the ability to work with others. Classes are offered in Pre-Ballet
(Creative Dance) for 3- 5 year olds; Ballet for older children based on
the internationally recognized Cecchetti syllabus; Highland for 5 years
& up, and Creative Movement. Children are offered the
opportunities and are encouraged to enter examinations conducted by
Cecchetti Canada for ballet, and the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance
for highland. Dancers from the school have excelled in competitions
throughout the Island, B.C., Canada and internationally; and every child
performs in the year-end recital as well as many other community
functions.
Several have been members of and have performed with Dancestreams Youth Dance Company.
